CRIME DOWN: Guyana has recorded its lowest murder rate for 10 years

GUYANA HAS recorded its lowest murder rate in a decade, according to police officials.

This year, the country has so far reported 108 murders – which is the lowest level in ten years.

Acting Deputy Commissioner and Crime Chief of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Wendell Blanhum says serious crimes in the country have declined by 19 percent, in comparison to the same time last year.

Speaking at the launch of the Christmas Police Plan 2022, Mr Blanhum, also said murders have steadily decreased over the last decade.

“The data confirms that there was a fluctuation in the trends with a peak in 2020 with 157 murders recorded in that year. However, there was a steady decline in the number of murders.

“It can be clearly observed that over the five-year period, disorderly murders have been the most prevalent category of murders recorded in Guyana. There were 368 disorderly murders during this five-year period. These murders emanated from disorderly conduct and interpersonal violence,” he explained.

He added that most of the murders committed over the last four years were a result of domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

The police say they had seized 68 illegal firearms so far this year.

Mr Blanhum revealed the United States and Brazil are the countries of origin for the illegal guns.

“Regarding Brazil, a significant number of illegal firearms seized are the taurus pistols and revolvers. The taurus weapons are produced and sourced from Brazil. Our investigation has so far revealed that Lethem is a main transit points for these weapons,” he said.

The police said the number of murders, incidents of rape and robberies declined in 2022.

According to authorities there have been no reported cases of kidnapping last year and so far this year.

Guyanese police also plan to launch a social media campaign to help combat serious crime.

With the murder rates for African-heritage people in the Caribbean; the cities of the U.S., London, South Africa booming, how has the Guyanese Government managed to prevent its African-heritage population from killing their African-heritage peers?
