THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

The theme of celebrations to mark the institutions 75th-year will be  “UWI at 75, rooted, ready, rising”.

A year-long celebration will see all campuses across the Caribbean take part in award ceremonies, academic seminars, sports and cultural events, research showcases, benefit gala events and scholarships.

“We have much in which to be proud. We have much to celebrate …This 75th year will sizzle with regional activities”, said UWI Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Hillary Beckles at the launch held in-person and virtually.

Prof Beckles described UWI’s 75 years of existence as “a success as a fine global university rooted in Caribbean civilization.”

He added that the success was only possible “as a result of persistent and dedicated funding as a public university by the governments of the region”.

The UWI is partially funded by 17 governments across the Caribbean.

The university is currently ranked within the top 1.5 % of universities in the world.

In 2021, UWI soared to within the top 1.5% universities in the world, according to the Times Higher Education ranking system.

The university was previously ranked within the top 3% universities in 2020, but shot up an impressive 94 places in the table in 2021.

The rankings are based on a global field of an estimated 30,000 universities and elite research institutes, the University of the West Indies (UWI) now sits near the global summit of academic institutions.

UWI also announced that January 7 would be known as UWI day to commemorate the day in 1943 when land in Mona, St Andrew, Jamaica was allocated to build the first UWI campus.

All African-heritage Subjects ought to raise a glass of Jamaican White Rum, in honour of the birthday and stature of the University of the West Indie; and Sir Hilary Beckles, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, for turning the University of the West Indies, into a “world class” university.

I was angry that England’s academics and Oxbridge University did not offer Sir Hilary Beckles a position after he graduates from Hull University.

I am still angry that Professor Robert Beckford and Professor Robin Walker, are not employed by one of the Oxbridge Universities.

I now realised that Sir Hilary Beckles was blessed not to have been offered Employment by an Oxbridge University.

Sir Hilary is working in the Caribbean; amongst his heritage people, and making a great success of the university.

All of His Majesty’s African-heritage Subjects, should seriously think of leaving “babylon,” and making a success of ourselves in Africa, or the Caribbean, as Sir Hilary has achieved.

England is not the only country on Planet Earth; and we should be brave enough to remember this truth; especially as England ruling elite have been subverted by careerists and non-loyal ethnic people.
