Birmingham 2022 strengthen legacy planning with five new appointments

The group is collectively tasked with establishing a legacy strategy

THE ORGANISERS of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, have appointed five new members to the Legacy and Benefits (LAB) Committee – a cross-partner group set up to ensure that the city, region and country maximises the benefits of hosting the biggest sporting event to be held in the UK since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Selected following an extensive recruitment process, the five new additions join a group made up of representatives from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Combined Authority, Coventry City Council, and the Commonwealth Games Federation. 

This group is collectively tasked with establishing a legacy strategy for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and overseeing the delivery of a comprehensive programme of benefits for the city and region linked to the Games.

The new recruits, who’ll play a key role in ensuring that Birmingham and the West Midlands take full advantage of this unique moment in the national and international spotlight, are:

  • Fleur Sexton – Managing director and co-founder of an award-winning training provider, Fleur was selected as Businesswoman of the Year for 2017/18. A Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands, Fleur actively supports civic, voluntary, charitable and activity across the West Midlands.
  • Casey Bailey – Assistant head teacher at Windsor Academy Trust. Born in Nechells, Casey studied for both his physical education degree and PGCE at Worcester University. A mentor and football coach for young people, Casey is also a writer and performs poetry.
  • Anisa Morridadi – Founder and CEO of Beatfreeks Collective, Anisa is passionate about young people and created the Brum Youth Trends and Summit to ensure young people’s voices could be heard. Anisa was the winner of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe Social Entrepreneurship 2017 and founded TEDxYouth in Birmingham.
  • Sarah Rennie – A highly experienced accessibility specialist who has worked closely with the transport sector, having successfully supported teams with the mobilisation and transition of West Midlands Trains and Transport for Wales. Sarah is a member of the Independent Disability Advisory Group providing Transport for London with strategic and practical advice.
  • Nicola Ibbetson – The Chief Commercial Officer at Aston Villa Football Club, Nicola has also held similar roles at Chelsea and Manchester United Football Club. Nicola is a Board member of the Football Association’s Women’s Super League and is Chair of the Women’s Championship.

The LAB committee is chaired by John Crabtree, who also chairs the Birmingham 2022 Board. Crabtree said: “We are delighted to confirm our new recruits and we’re pleased to have added five people that bring very different knowledge and experience but all share a passion for ensuring that the city of Birmingham and the West Midlands maximises the opportunities that hosting a globally significant event like the Commonwealth Games brings.
