LEWISHAM BORN Montell Douglas has been selected amongst Team GB’s bobsledders to compete at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games next month.

Douglas, who competed for Team GB at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in athletics, will team up with Mica McNeill in the women’s bobsleigh with Adele Nicoll travelling as the reserve athlete for the women’s team.

She represented Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing in both the 100m and the 4x100m relay, reaching the final in the latter.

In setting a personal best of 11.05 seconds over the 100m on July 17, 2008, Douglas broke a national record that had stood for more than a quarter of a century. Earlier that day, she had also run a wind-assisted 10.95 seconds at the Loughborough European Athletics meet.

She won Commonwealth Gold in the 4x100m relay in Delhi and has also competed at both European and World Championship level.

Her first bobsleigh race for GB came in mid-January 2017, just a few days after first taking to the ice in a sled.

A top-10 finish on her World Cup debut was followed by seventh in St Moritz and then an excellent Europa Cup victory before the end of the month. That success alongside McNeill in Winterberg was GB’s first EC gold in seven years and it came just a fortnight after Montell’s international bow.

The south Londoner went on to add a Winter Olympic involvement to her summer appearance after she was selected as the reserve athlete for the 2018 Games in PyeongChang.

She has since recorded a career high fourth with McNeill in the World Cup race in Altenberg in January 2019 and now has two World Championship appearances to her name, having placed 12th in Whistler in 2019 and eighth in Altenberg in February 2020.
