BRITISH SPRINT queen Dina Asher-Smith made her 2023 intentions clear when she won the 60m final at the Birmingham World Indoor Tour final in a time of 7.05.

On her way to the title at the Utilita Arena, Asher-Smith broke British record in semis and can now look forward to a positive season which will include the World Championships in Budapest in the summer.

The Great Briton said post-race: “I’m really happy to have run a British record. I was aiming for sub-7 today but it’s good and it’s good that I’m frustrated running so fast. It bodes really well and everything has been going really well in training so I can’t complain.

“I think for me indoors is always about getting ready for the outdoors. I like to perform at the major championships and I work back from things like Budapest, things like Oregon last year, I work back and map out my season. I haven’t done indoors for so long properly, I thought we would give it a shot this year and I’m happy.

“I really enjoy running here. We were working out yesterday that I haven’t run here since 2014 at the Birmingham Indoor, I’ve done Glasgow, I’ve run in Sheffield, but I just haven’t run in Birmingham so it’s really nice to be back. It looks beautiful and it makes me proud that we have got such an amazing warm crowd. I love running at home and I’ve got loads of friends in the audience, so it means a lot.

The 60m runner-up Daryll Neita, who came home in 7.13, said:“If I’m being honest, I’m not particularly happy with that run, I didn’t execute my start, but all in all 7.13 is a good day’s work. I’m happy with today.

“Indoors for me was just about sharpening up my 60 and I just want to get closer to having a good acceleration in my 100m race so I’m really excited and I think it’s looking good heading outdoors.

On the upcoming European Indoor Championships in Budapest early next month, the sprinter added: “I’m feeling in good shape, so I am really excited for next week.”
