Weekend of women announced by FA

This marks another landmark for the growing popularity of women's football

MOMENTUM: Check out your local team on November 16-17

FOLLOWING a record-breaking opening weekend in the 2019/20 Barclays FA Women’s Super League, The FA has announced plans for the first-ever Women’s Football Weekend, with November 16 -17 set to be another landmark moment in the growing popularity of the women’s game.

With the men’s international weekend creating a pause in the English Premier League and EFL calendars, The FA are calling on supporters to capitalise on the opportunity to back Women’s Football Weekend and to attend a women’s match at any level in the pyramid next month.

Kelly Simmons, The FA’s Women’s Professional Game Director said: “We are excited to announce the first ever Women’s Football Weekend, for what is sure to be another great moment in a year that has seen huge momentum behind the growth in popularity of women’s football.

“Following on from a record-breaking FIFA Women’s World Cup and opening Barclays FA Women’s Super League weekend, there has never been a better time to visit your local team, and we encourage all supporters to get involved at all levels of the pyramid on 16-17 November.”

Meanwhile The Football Association [The FA] has also revealed that the WSL will be broadcast overseas for the first time in its history.

Starting from the 2019/20 season, a new three-year media rights deal with Sky Mexico and Scandinavian broadcaster NENT will see the Barclays FA WSL screened to viewers across Mexico, Central America, Dominican Republic, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

The six-figure revenue from the deals will be reinvested into the further broadcasting of women’s football, including the development of The FA Player and its in-game production.

The new global over-the-top [OTT] live streaming platform, which launched recently, will provide free unprecedented access to over 150 domestic women’s football fixtures throughout the upcoming season, with the first live matches available this weekend.

In addition to live league coverage, The FA Player will stream selected match highlights from the Lionesses, the Women’s FA Cup and the FA Women’s Continental League Cup, as well as archive footage and regularly updated features.

As part of the agreement, live Barclays FA WSL matches in The FA Player will now be geo-blocked in the countries served by Sky Mexico and NENT.

Arsenal are the current WSL champions.
