Midfield misfit Morrison’s career still stalling

A number of Championship clubs may rescue Morrison's career

LACK OF GAME TIME: Ravel Morrison

RAVEL MORRISON’S goal of turning out for Jamaica appear to have taken another setback, with his club career at Sheffield United likely to come crashing down in January.

The midfielder joined the Premier League (PL) newboys in July, but has played just 14 top-flight minutes since signing a season-long deal and already his replacement has been lined up.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was aware that it was a gamble by signing Morrison as the 26-year-old has constantly been deemed a misfit at each club he’s represented – because he is considered to be a loose cannon, both on and off the pitch.

Wilder swooped when Morrison, a former Manchester United protégé, became a free agent after being released by Swedish top-tier club Ostersunds FK just six months into his contract.

Yet with the PL January transfer window looming, Sheffield United are aiming to strengthen their squad after an impressive start to life in the top flight. Morrison is expected to be given the chop as he has not even been included in their squad.

With a £12m deal for QPR forward Eberechi Eze potentially on the cards, the club are expected to end contracts with any players who are seen as surplus to requirements and a waste of money. Morrison falls into that category, having yet to impress Wilder enough in training.

Morrison has failed to prove his worth at club level, so has no hope at international level until he plays regularly. A number of Championship clubs may rescue Morrison’s career, but far too many appear to be put off by his checkered past both on and off the field.

Following his exit from Manchester United his spells at Birmingham City, QPR and West Ham bought mixed success. His time in Italy with Lazio resulted in plenty of game time for one of Serie A’s big sides, but he was suddenly shipped out on loan to Atlas at Mexico.

Morrison was approached by Jamaica about an international call-up during his short-lived spell in Mexico. The British-born ace duly obtained his Jamaican passport and was selected for the Reggae Boyz’ initial 40-strong squad to tackle the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

He was omitted from the final squad because he was refused a visa to the United States, and since then Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz have shown virtually no interest in Morrison.

Yet that could alter as Jamaica head coach Theodore Whitmore has been scanning the potential talent on offer for his Boyz to tackle the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

But to be under consideration then Morrison has to be playing regularly, and his expected departure from Sheffield United could be a blessing in disguise and with a new club may kick-start his international career with Jamaica.
