A YouGov poll has revealed that a majority of Britons are of the opinion that Premier League players should be willing to take pay cuts during the coronavirus pandemic. New YouGov Sport research reveals that the majority (92%) of Brits think the players should be prepared to take a pay cut.
With all professional football in England suspended until April 30 at the very earliest, multiple clubs have now announced furlough measures and salary reductions for non-playing staff as they attempt to navigate their way through the huge financial challenges posed by the current crisis.
Club bosses and player representatives are due to meet to discuss how changes to sports leagues brought about by the COVID-19 outbreak will affect footballers’ salaries – as clubs begin to place other staff on furlough pay.
Premier League clubs are living in a “moral vacuum” and players should be first to sacrifice salaries during the coronavirus pandemic, say politicians.
Julian Knight, the chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee, has condemned the actions of some Premier League clubs, who have furloughed non-playing staff.
Tottenham, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Norwich have opted to utilise the government’s job retention scheme.
“It sticks in the throat,” said Knight.
“This exposes the crazy economics in English football and the moral vacuum at its centre.”
