JA wannabe Morrison makes move to the Netherlands

Errant talent has signed for top-flight Dutch club ADO Den Haag

ON THE MOVE: Ravel Morrison

RAVEL MORRISON, currently on the radar of joining Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz for the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals, has signed for top-flight Dutch club ADO Den Haag.

In a desperate bid to rescue his career the 27-year-old, a free agent after being released by English Premier League (EPL) side Sheffield United last month, had been weighing up a move to Holland’s Eredivise following talks with FC Utrecht and Vitesse Arnhem but has joined ADO Den Haag.

ADO Den Haag will be aiming to improve on last season’s 17th spot in the top flight and Morrison likely to be straight in their squad.

Outbreak

Although finances are considerably tighter in Holland than England, especially due to the impact of the coronavirus outbreak, clubs were genuinely interested in acquiring the midfielder’s services. And Morrison was eager to find a new team with his goal of turning out for the Boyz being championed by the Jamaica Football Federation.

Having constantly failed to prove his worth this is the opportunity he needs to show signs of rediscovering the form that saw him labelled as one of the most exciting prospects in England when he broke through as a teenager at Manchester United.

Yet he has experienced short stints wherever he has been, and the journeyman’s club career most recent setback was being released by EPL’s Sheffield United after his loan to Championship side Middlesborough came crashing down with just three abject appearances.

ADO Den Haag will be fully aware that it is be a major gamble by signing the Manchester-born player, because he has been deemed a misfit at each team he’s represented as he’s considered to be a loose cannon – both on and off the pitch.

Overseas

Morrison was been forced to look overseas once more as English clubs appeared to be put off by his checkered past both on and off the field. The midfielder has already competed in Italy, Mexico and Sweden.

During his short-lived 2017 spell in Mexico he was approached by Jamaica regarding an international call-up. The British-born ace duly obtained his Jamaican passport and was selected for the Boyz’ initial 40-strong squad to tackle the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. But he was omitted from the final squad as he was refused a visa to the United States because of his criminal background.

This month the Boyz have renewed their interest in Morrison with Jamaica head coach Theodore Whitmore scanning the potential talent on offer for his troops to tackle the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

This new outfit, his 11th professional club, could kick-start his international career with Jamaica for his long overdue debut if Whitmore likes what he sees and hears back from the Dutch top tier about Morrison.
