GROUP D of Africa’s Cup of Nations took its final shape following the third round of fixtures with Nigeria completing a clean sweep of three straight wins to see them finish top of the group above Egypt in second.

The Super Eagles claimed a comfortable 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau in Garoua, with their Premier League stars at the heart of their victory once again.

Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho turned provider for his strike partner Umar Sadiq to get the game’s opening goal shortly into the second half, with Watford defender William Troost-Ekong sealing the win with fifteen minutes left to play.

The result leaves Nigeria as the only side in this year’s tournament to win all three of their group games, and means they face a 3rd placed side in the first round of knockout fixtures on the January 23. Guinea-Bissau ended the tournament bottom of Group D, with their draw against Sudan their only point of the competition.

Egypt ensured the progression into the next round with a 1-0 win over Sudan.

Mohamed Abdelmonem grabbed the only goal of the game with a headed effort from a corner in the 35th minute to set up a tie against the winners of Group E on January 26.

The Pharaohs were perhaps happier to see Liverpool star Mohammed Salah leave the pitch in one piece after avoiding a potentially serious injury, after a high challenge from Sudan’s Mazin Mohamedein.

Sudan, who were playing in their first major tournament since 2012, couldn’t find many key moments in the game and finish third in Group D as a result.
