FOLLOWING WEEKS of derision regarding their lack of action to coronavirus, Premier League footballers broadcast their response via Twitter and Instagram last night in a coordinated move under the #PlayersTogether initiative.

The donations, which are independent to any discussions between clubs and the Premier League, are expected to raise millions of pounds for frontline NHS workers battling the virus. Those funds will be directed towards NHS Charities Together, which coordinates more than 150 charities and can distribute money quickly wherever it is needed most.

Jordan Henderson, the Liverpool captain who was reportedly instrumental in conducting talks between the league’s captains, issued an accompanying statement on behalf of all contributing players.

“#PlayersTogether is about we, the players, collaborating together to create a voluntary initiative, separate to any other club and league conversations, that can help get much needed funds to those that need it right now” read the statement.

While certain clubs are in more advanced discussions regarding player wage cuts, the impasse between the Premier League and PFA is delaying the speed of any standardised response.

Amid the ongoing talks and a situation that threatens to drag on into the foreseeable future, the importance of this united move cannot be underestimated.
