Another big breakthrough for precocious Coco Gauff

American tennis ace finds herself world No. 49 before her 16th birthday

SUCCESS: Coco Gauff

THE LATEST version of the WTA rankings has seen Coco Gauff reach another milestone in her sensational young career.

The American teenager made her top 50 debut in the updated WTA rankings released this week, becoming the first 15-year-old in 15 years to achieve the feat.

Gauff first stormed into the public eye when she defeated Venus Williams in the first round at Wimbledon last year. And now she finds herself world No. 49 before her 16th birthday following her impressive run of form so far this year.

PEAK

Other WTA Tour results and points dropped for rival players saw Gauff reach a new peak in the latest version of the rankings.

Gauff’s year-end ranking in 2018 was 686 and she had risen to 68 by the end of 2019.

Gauff, who continued her dramatic rise by reaching the fourth round on her recent Australian Open debut before losing to eventual champion Sofia Kenin, emulates Bulgarian Sesil Karatantcheva, who made the top 50 at the same age in August 2005.

Gauff has enjoyed a sensational run on the professional circuit since July last year when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in her first major championship appearance.
