AN EDUCATION pack detailing the history of the Windrush generation has been published, in a bid to educate the masses on the generation who helped rebuild post-war Britain.
The definitive Windrush education pack was launched on Friday (Dec 14) at a large gathering in Lambeth Town Hall, London.
The resource has been prepared by education practitioners as well as community advocates, and published by Windrush Foundation. It includes more than 150 pages of activities, photographs, and information for students, teachers, parents, guardians and anyone keen to know some of the interesting post-war stories of Caribbean people in the UK.
This Key Stage two ‘pdf online resource’ is free and will be available from Windrush Foundation on request.
The pack reveals some truths regarding the MV Empire Windrush , including that there were more than 1,000 (not 492) Caribbean men and women who disembarked at Tilbury Docks, Essex, on 22 June 1948, having travelled on the ship.
The Windrush education pack also highlights the contributions of some of the Windrush pioneers and champions who helped to rebuild Britain after WWII and who laid the foundation for those who later settled in the UK.
Speakers at the Launch included: Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Christopher Wellbelove; Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE (Patron, Windrush Foundation), Burt Caesar, Ansel Wong, Lambeth Councillor Sonia Winifred and Arthur Torrington (Director, Windrush Foundation), with music by Manjeet Rasiya (on the Tabla), Keith Waithe (on the Flute), and De Alberto (Calypsonian).
In addition to the launch event, the publication of a new book, entitled 70 Windrush Pioneers & Champions made its debut. With more than 150 pages, it gives summary profiles of some of the Caribbean men and women who have made significant contributions to Britain’s well-being and prosperity.
Book and education resource published with an award from Heritage Lottery Fund.
