Uganda Independence Day: four stars of stage and screen

STAR: Daniel Kaluuya

Daniel Kaluuya

The British Ugandan actor began his acting career in British TV and has taken his talent global. He was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in Jordan Peele’s hit horror film Get Out. Since then, the star has continued to make his mark in Hollywood. In the box-office record breaking Black Panther he played W’Kabi, a divisive character who turned against T’Challa. At the film’s premiere in LA, Daniel proudly repped his heritage, wearing a kanza sent over from his family in Uganda. His next film Queen and Slim, out in the UK in January, sees him on the run after shooting and killing a policeman in self defence.

Aside from her Ugandan heritage, Florence Kasumba shares something else with fellow actor Daniel Kaluuya. The Ugandan-German actress was catapulted into the global spotlight thanks to her role in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther. She played Ayo, a member of the Dora Milage, an elite group of female warriors tasked with protecting Black Panther. In her most recent role on the big screen, Florence voiced hyena Shenzi in Disney’s The Lion King. She’s currently starring in Netflix’s Criminal.

Arnold Oceng

Born in Uganda, Arnold Oceng moved to the UK as a child. His acting career, which began when he was just six years old, has seen him take on roles in Noel Clarke’s Adulthood and Brotherhood, Amma Asante’s A United Kingdom and star alongside Reese Witherspoon in The Good Lie. However, he got his first role in Grange Hill.

As well as focusing on taking his own career to new heights, Arnold is keen to help upcoming acting talent navigate the industry. As part of his efforts to do this, he’ll be at Your Cinema’s Give Back event later this month. The session will enable actors and creatives to get advice on different aspects of the industry.

Sheila Atim

A former model, Sheila has impressed on stage in Othello and Girl from the North Country, for which she won an Olivier Award in 2018. Her talent will soon be seen by the world as she’s been cast in the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel series. Earlier this year her services to drama received royal recognition when she was awarded an MBE.
