Black is best at the Brits

The 40th anniversary of the Brit Awards sees south London star Dave scoop top honour and he also has a pop at Prime Minister Boris Johnson

Most prestigious award of the evening won by Dave

DAVID OROBOSA Omoregie otherwise known as Dave took the top honour at the 2020 Brit Awards scooping the album of the year for debut album Psychodrama.

The 21-year-old who had performed Black earlier in the night looked shell shocked as he walked to the stage to collect his winners trophy.

He had already set social media alight with his performance in which he changed lyrics of his track to lament the government and media.

Female Solo Artist: Mabel

No burning issue was spared as Dave touched on the Windrush scandal, victims of Grenfell and the treatment received by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, the south London artist spoke for many including calling the Prime Minister Boris Johnson racist.

He rapped: “And if somebody hasn’t said it / Equality is a right, it doesn’t deserve credit / If you don’t wanna get it, then you’re never gonna get it / How the news treats Kate versus how they’re treating Meghan.”

“It is racist, whether or not it feels racist. The truth is our Prime Minister is a real racist.”

Upon picking up his award Dave took time to salute those who are looking up to his success. In keeping with his humble rise to stardom he enthused: “Everyone that comes from the place I come from (and the) young kings and queens that are chasing their dreams.

“I am no different from you.

Stormzy: Male Solo Artist winner

“I am just a guy. Everything I’m saying is a fact: you can do anything you put your mind to.”

The Male Solo Artist winner was won by Stormzy, another highlight of the evening. The Grime artist beat Dave, Harry Styles, Lewis Capaldi, and Michael Kiwanuka to take home this coveted award.

Mabel beat Charli XCX, FKA Twigs, Freya Ridings and Mahalia to take home the coveted Female Solo Artist.

Tyler, the Creator, who took time to have a dig at former Prime Minister Theresa May for not allowing him to enter the country five years ago, took the International Male Solo Artist, while British-Jamaican Celeste, who was born in LA but Brighton-raised, landed the Rising Star Award.

Rising Star Award British-Jamaican Celeste

Speaking on her win, Celeste said: “It’s a huge honour to be the recipient of the BRITs Rising Star Award 2020. Like many others, I grew up watching The BRITs and have been continually inspired by its nominees, winners and the performances.  I hope to make the most of this incredible opportunity and I can’t wait to perform on The BRITs next year.”

With the Brit Awards celebrating their 40th anniversary it had been widely anticipated that there would be some controversial moments and politicians at this time are an easy target, however this years awards will also be remembered for some powerful performances.

Lizzo was all of that and then some while Stormzy and Burna Boy provided that cool every awards show needs.
