Ghetts gives back

THE VOICE online caught up with British Grime and rap star Ghetts this week as the award-winning artist spent some time at Made Up Kitchen in east London.

Earlier this summer, Ghetts joined Wray & Nephew to bring their ‘fambly’ together for the first IRL experience after lockdown for the Wray Residency.

The Wray Residency series are intimate pop-up moments hosted in unexpected locations featuring both rising and established artists.

When I came here I left feeling motivated and it was me that was meant to be giving the motivation

He could have been anywhere in the world soaking up the deserved adulation and platitudes that haven’t stopped coming his way since landing the GRM Rated Awards prestigious Album of the Year prize earlier this month, but the Newham artist said it was important for him to be able to shine a light on community initiatives making a concerted difference.

Partnering up with Wray and Nephew Ghetts admitted that he’d only recently been made aware of the facility in the heart of Hackney, having visited a couple of months earlier, but he wanted to use his light to bring about even more awareness for the work the many volunteers do.

Made Up Kitchen was established in 2012 when a group of like-minded people came together to share their Sundays.

The facility now invites people in the community to do the same every week and turn food waste into community feasts which are cooked and enjoyed together.

Over the last 18 months, their community shop in Hackney has brought together local people who all gift their time and skills.

“I came here a couple of months ago to do a talk with some of the young kids and the adults who were working here and the energy that I felt when I was here was so pure.

“We don’t have one of these in Newham, where I am from, this is the next best thing for me.

“When I came here I left feeling motivated and it was me that was meant to be giving the motivation and the inspiring talk but when I left here I thought, ‘what a great exchange that was’.

As well as enjoying some of the food cooked by the volunteers The Wray & Nephew x Ghetts Community Day saw the artists friends and family will come together to help refit the community space.

The Community Day is part of Wray & Nephew’s partnership with Ghetts which in July saw them team up to launch the first Wray Residency of the year – an immersive house party in a derelict hotel for all friends and family celebrating the end of lockdown and reconnecting once again. If you missed out, you can watch the Wray Residency back, here.
