Anticipation mounts for ‘Osoro’

Sheila Nortley's short film will be screened at a variety of national and international film festivals in 2024

Osoro will have a private screening in London next month

SHELIA NORTLEY has teamed up with Rope Ladder Fiction on the highly anticipated short film, Osoro

The film stars newcomer Rima Nsubuga alongside Kaine Lawrence, Shingai Shoniwa, and Nadine Mills. 

Osoro follows the story of Alesha as she embarks on a perilous magical journey through space and time to see her first love again. Nortley is known as a producer on a number of notable projects which include Harlan Coben’s Stay Close and upcoming Netflix show Supacell.

For Osoro, her new creative endeavour she steps into writing, directing and executive producing. 

The concept for the film emerged from a deeply personal place for Nortley, who said: “I was inspired to write this film after experiencing grief for the first time. In our work, we get to create worlds. 

“I wanted to create a world where the past could be visited and explore grief in a way which was nuanced and beautiful and honest.”

Martina Russo, of Unleyek Productions, took on the role of producer for Osoro stating: “The dedication of our exceptional cast and female-led crew, turned an ambitious dream into a cinematic reality.” 

Cameron Roach expressed his passion for the film, adding: “At Rope Ladder, we believe in the power of exceptional stories. Osoro presented us with an opportunity to break away from conventional paths of development. 

“It’s crucial for studios to embrace diverse narratives that resonate with the depth and richness of the human experience.”  

In 2023, Nortley took on the role of executive producer on several short films to life, including Egg & Chips, Wildfire and BBC short Nia teaming up with Russo as Producer. 

She currently has a feature film Birdsong in development with BBC and Parkville Pictures and feature documentary White Teeth in production. Nortley also unveiled a compelling array of projects currently in development under her banner NORTO.

Rope Ladder Fiction has also produced a second short film Surprise, Baby! with Northern Fortress Films, written and directed by Zane Igbe and produced by Louisa Rose Mackleston. 

Osoro is not just a standalone project; Nortley and co-writer Terry Kalunga-Jones are developing the feature-length screenplay and Nortley also has a television series in the works with Rope Ladder. 

“These partnerships are a symbiotic relationship, blending industry resources with gripping stories and new outlooks for mainstream films and TV shows,” Nortley enthused.  

Osoro has generated a considerable buzz, marked by a private screening in March and upcoming festival appearances scheduled for this summer
