Theatre Peckham receives award

THEATRE PECKHAM, have announced that it has been awarded the prestigious Music and Drama Education Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre. 

This recognition highlights Theatre Peckham’s commitment to artistic excellence, social change and the empowerment of young creatives.

Through its Academy, Theatre Peckham provides young people, aged 3-16, with the opportunity to develop their skills, gain confidence and experience theatre within a supportive community. 

As a result, young people are equipped with the tools and knowledge to perform at a professional level and are empowered to become leaders in the industry.

Theatre Peckham’s vision is to build a genuinely representative and inclusive society where everyone can participate in, lead, work in, and enjoy creativity and culture. With a focus on locally based participants aged 3-25, 77% of whom identify as Black, Asian, or ethnically diverse, Theatre Peckham strives to create a safe and nurturing space where children and young people can reflect on and creatively communicate their lived experiences.

“We are incredibly honoured to receive this Music and Drama Education Award,” said Suzann McLean MBE, CEO/Artistic Director of Theatre Peckham. 

“Winning this award is not just a moment of celebration for our Academy, it is also a reminder of the importance of investing in the arts and providing opportunities for young people to thrive. Through our continued dedication to young people in Southwark we aim to inspire generations of performers and leaders who will shape the future of the creative industries.”

The Judges supported the high-quality work that Theatre Peckham offers to the young people in its community, the peer-to-peer interaction, and their unwavering commitment to making musical theatre accessible to a wide range of ages.
