Local author’s debut poetry collection shines a spotlight on self-love

DEBUT BOOK: Ramona Ashby

BARBADOS-BORN East Londoner Ramona Ashby’s debut poetry collection, ‘Cycles of love’, celebrates black culture and candidly voices her experience of relationships.

Divided into four chapters: Celebration, Ecstasy, Realisation, Breathe out, the book takes you on a journey from the initial euphoria of falling in love; to the heartache of betrayal; to harmony through self-love and healing.

Breaking her motivation for writing the book and why she felt it was important that her writing celebrates black culture, Ashby said: “We can get caught in a cycle of negative relationships for fear of being alone,”

“I chose to rid myself of self-limiting beliefs. I chose to reassess and incorporate new practices in my day-to-day life. We can choose to practice well-being and valuing ourselves, and this will help improve our friendships and relationships with our partners, recognising there is power in making mistakes and bouncing back.”

She added: “There is hope, and I’ve learnt on my journey to own my happiness, with steps to self-care to change your experience: buying a bunch of roses, taking yourself on a lunch date, journalling your emotions and experiences, and looking after your physical and mental health.

“As an individual, I am responsible for my self-love, and it’s through poetry I’ve learnt to value and comfort myself.

“Poetry is evocative and empowering and it’s inspiring to see a broad spectrum of artists articulating this beautiful genre.

“It’s a community, a safe space to let out our feelings – joyous or painful – without judgement and boosting others with similar experiences.

“We can all be creative, use skills and create a new journey, and new story once we tap into what we love.”

‘Cycles of love’ has universal appeal, a simple style, and breathes warmth into the reader. With its captivating, vibrant, retro design – you’ll be fascinated and eager to learn more.

Thought provoking! Evocative! Emotional! Challenged me to look at all the cycles of love and how the biggest love I’m learning is me! The more we can learn to love ourselves I feel, the more open we are to romantically love others. Enjoyed the journey Cylces of Love took me on!
