Father and daughter race across the world and enjoy the journey together

Ladi and Monique tell The Voice how they navigated Canada on the BBC TV series

FAMILY MATTERS: Ladi and Monique

BBC ONE’s Race Across the World is currently in its third series, as five pairs of contestants navigate through Canada without phones, credit cards or even internet access!

Two of the series contestants, father and daughter duo 52-year-old Ladi and 25-year-old Monique sat down with The Voice to talk about their journey through the series.

Monique is an events manager based in East London, whilst Ladi is a consultant based in Essex.

MC: What made you want to get involved with Race Across The World?

M: I quite like travelling and me and dad are quite competitive as well, so I thought, ‘I think we’d be really good at this’ and he was like, ‘why not?’ I think it was still lock down when we sat in the garden and sent in our application video.

What was the toughest part of those two months of filming?

L: Sleep deprivation when we were on long journeys on buses, or trains, ferries, and the adjustments to our diet was very tough; mustard sandwiches are a thing!

It’s been a privilege to travel with my daughter as a young adult. We would never really get that time again, to do something like this

M: Getting used to not being able to talk to everyone I wanted to when I wanted to, like my friends, my mum, my boyfriend. I found that really tough not having my phone, not just for social media, but talking to people that I would usually talk to if I was in a bad mood or needed some advice.

I had my dad with me but it’s a long period of time to be in the same group of people 24/7.

What was the motivating factor to push through?

M: Being competitive, we always had the end in mind and knowing that we’re so privileged to be doing this experience together, it outweighed those tough moments.

Not a lot of people get the opportunity to travel across Canada with their dad at this age, so that in itself was such a privilege. You can always get sleep back but you’re never going to get back this moment and I think those good moments definitely outweighed the tough times.

L: What we went through is nothing in comparison to other things that I’ve gone through in life and as Monique said, we are both ultra-competitive, so it’s just eyes on the prize. Let’s get to the end goal.

Has there been any tough moments to watch back?

M: I didn’t know they were going to show a close up of my foot when I fell down the stairs. Oh my God.

L: We are both genuine people, we’re not playing up to cameras or anything, so for me there hasn’t been any real cringe moments although I haven’t seen the rest of the series yet. There might be!

ONCE IN A LIFETIME: Father and daughter shared a special journey

What was that father and daughter partnership like, and how did you use it to your advantage?

L: It’s been a privilege to travel with my daughter as a young adult. We would never really get that time again, to do something like this.

This journey taught me that in life, you can’t necessarily predict everything that’s going to happen, and you just have to go with the flow

I wanted her to learn things like how to navigate challenging situations of which she did brilliantly. It just gave me confidence that Monique is going to be alright in the world and she’s going to be good, even if I’m not around.

As a child, you are there 24/7 for your children but wow, having that time in adulthood, that’s just amazing.

Is there anything you have learnt which you will take away from the series?

M: To enjoy the journey, and not necessarily think about the destination all the time. This journey taught me that in life, you can’t necessarily predict everything that’s going to happen, and you just have to go with the flow, and enjoy the journey.

I think I’ve got a new appreciation of the world around me.

L: What was really profound for me about this is that whilst we live in a cynical world, I found that there are far more good people in the world then bad.

The level of hospitality and kindness that was shown to us throughout our journey was just so refreshing.

Just to know that I could go to a country thousands of miles away and there will be somebody who will do something out of the kindness of their heart just for you, wow!

Race Across the World continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer
