18 celebrities you probably didn’t know are Muslim

From rappers to athletes, there are many stars who follow Islam

RELIGIOUS: Rapper Busta Rhymes and singer Janet Jackson are both Muslim converts

WITH ISLAM being the second biggest religion in the world, it’s no surprise that there are one or two famous Muslims.

There are some notable celebrities such as boxer Muhammad Ali and rapper Swizz Beatz who have openly spoken about their faith, but there are probably a lot more stars you probably didn’t know identify as Muslim.

Jermaine Jackson converted to Islam back in 1989 after a trip to Bahrain. He ended up marrying an Afghan woman and has embraced his faith ever since. He claims he found the answers he had been looking for that Christianity never gave him.

Shaquille O’Neal is an Islam convert. In 2010, the basketball player made his faith public when he vocalised his plans to go on the sacred Muslim pilgrimage, Hajj.

T-Pain, real name Faheem Rashad Najm, was raised in a Muslim household. Although his religious views can be a little questionable at times, especially considering his song lyrics, he still claims to be a Muslim.

Mike Tyson, heavyweight boxing champion, changed his name to Malik Abdul Aziz and converted to Islam while serving a prison sentence for rape.

Former supermodel Iman Abdulmajid identifies herself as Muslim, but she says that she does not regularly practice the religion.

Malcolm X fought strongly for black power and black nationalism in the US as a Muslim. He was a leader of the Nation of Islam before being assassinated in 1965.

Muhammad Ali. After converting to Islam from Christianity, Ali was not afraid to make his religious views public before becoming one of the most remarkable boxers of all time.

Snoop Lion converted to Islam back when he was ‘Snoop Dogg’ in 2009. He was very vocal and proud about joining the Nation of Islam, but now he now claims that he is a Rastafarian.

Dave Chappelle converted to Islam back in 1998. He even tried to go on Hajj, but Chappelle claimed he only got as far as Turkey because the KSA wouldn’t give him a Visa.

Akon, born Aliaune Damala Akon Thiam, is a self-proclaimed Muslim and spiritual man.

Janet Jackson reportedly recently converted to Islam this year after marrying her husband, billionaire Wissam al Mana. Her brother, Jermaine Jackson, converted to Islam years ago.

Ice Cube, real name O’Shea Jackson, converted to Islam back in the early 90s when he was just coming on to the rap scene. He wrote the following about his faith: “I mean, what I call myself is a natural Muslim, ’cause it’s just me and God.”

Ghostface Killah converted to Islam in 2013. In a past interview, he said: “We all need spiritual guidance and nothing in life is real, not even rap music. God is beautiful and only He is real.”

Lupe Fiasco was born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco in Chicago, and he was raised in a Muslim household.

Mos Def first started to study Islam when he was a teenager, and he declared his Muslim faith at the age of 19.

Nas was raised by a Muslim father and a Christian mother. He has mentioned both religions in his lyrics.

Omar Epps is reportedly Muslim, but he is not very vocal about his spirituality.
