New organisation will train Black church leaders on how to support domestic violence survivors

The Black Church Domestic Abuse Forum is believed to be the first ever group of its kind

IN AN initiative that has been five years in the making, Black church leaders are joining forces with professionals to better support domestic abuse survivors.

After learning that some Black women felt the church could not support them through domestic violence problems, Elaine Bowes was inspired to start the Black Church Domestic Abuse Forum (BCDAF)

Following conversations with social workers, psychologists and lawyers, she will officially launch the BCDAF on January 28 with a virtual event.

Elaine said: “It’s been encouraging to see Black professionals join together to work to make this a reality.

“It’s very much needed, especially during this lockdown where it’s been reported that domestic violence has been very much on the rise.  It’s my hope that the BCDAF plays a part in eradicating domestic violence and abuse from people’s lives.”

A toolkit entitled ‘Walk in the Way of Love’ will be used to train leaders.

Reverend David Shosanya who is a part of the initiative has led pilot training sessions.

He said: “Leaders have been very open to receiving the training, and it’s apparent that many are keen to be equipped so that they can respond compassionately and practically to church members and those within the wider community who have experienced domestic violence and abuse.”

Dr. Ava Kanyeredzi who is a senior lecturer on the Forensic, Clinical and Community Psychology programme at the University fo East London will lead project research and evaluation.

She said: “I am thrilled to be part of this project and to create new knowledge that can improve church responses to domestic abuse in Black communities within the UK.”

Kim Bacchus is a domestic violence survivor and will train others.

Reverend Geoffrey Folkes from the Church of God in Christ and Pastor Marjorie Esomowei founder of Wisdom for Women International will also be present at the event launch.
