Matilde Vicenzi: Masters of Puff Pastry

At an age when women entrepreneurs are finally being celebrated left and right, the story of Matilde Vicenzi can be a source of great inspiration.

IF YOU happen to have a soft corner for Italian pastries, you are sure to have heard of Matilde Vicenzi. With the simplistic logo displaying a silhouette of a beautiful woman drawn onto a golden backdrop, the brand and its packaging never fail to catch the attention of a shopper, let alone a lover of some puff pastry treats.

More than a century into its existence, the great Italian pastry maker is now appreciated in more than 110 countries around the world. Under The Vicenzi Group, which was formed back in 2005, the company now also owns and distributes two other famous brands – Grisbì and Mr. Day for short pastry and snacks respectively.

Key Contributors of the Brand’s Success

As one would expect, there are a plethora of reasons that have driven Matilde Vicenzi to its world-beating success. The production of some delicious pastries certainly helped, so did their passion for finding out the best ingredients and assuring the highest quality of baking and productions. It is a premium manufacturer of fresh bakery products after all, on which hundreds of people rely for their regular supplies of cookies, cake bases, single-served sweet, and of course, assorted pastries.

Hailed and appreciated around the world as the masters of puff pastry, the company never feels afraid to embrace new techniques, experiment with new recipes, and play with different ingredients to improve their products consistently. It is a trait that served the company very well over the years, helping it to grow from a small family-run business to a symbol of fine Italian pastry. Yet, all of these traits are still held together with a deep-lying family value that stems from the name of the brand itself.

Matilde Vicenzi – The Pioneering Lady from Verona

Unlike some other brands, the name Matilde Vicenzi is not a made-up character. Rather, it’s the name of the pioneering lady who opened her pastry shop back in 1905! When you consider the year, you know how daring it was for her to start her business at that time.

Based in San Giovanni Lupatoto, Verona, she used to make and sell a delicious line of hand-baked Ladyfingers, Amaretti, and Pastries. A trailblazing woman entrepreneur with a traditional family value, Matilde also left her descendants with a collection of handwritten recipes for all her pastry creations.

So, although it’s her grandchild, Giuseppe who later took the brand to its global status, it is Matilde’s recipes that are still used to make Vicenzi’s pastries so authentic, unique, and delicious. It’s not only the recipes either, the traditional family values and the pioneering spirit that drove Matilde to open her bakery are still the driving factors behind everything the company does. That’s why the brand still delivers the small-town authentic taste even if the puff pastries are savored all over the world.
