Exploring Tenerife: Best Free Things to Do on the Island

FROM NATURAL parks and botanical gardens to beaches and pools, learn some of the activities you can do for free in Tenerife.

Without a doubt, Tenerife is an island blessed with amazing landscapes with top-notch beaches combined with an interesting culture and history. That’s the recipe for an unforgettable holiday destination.

Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands welcomes millions of tourists from all over the world each year, it’s home to the widest selection of all inclusive hotels in the Canary Islands, and offers a high number of activities. As you explore the island, you’ll come across many different attractions and interestingly enough, many of them can be done without spending a dime.

Free Things to Do in Tenerife

Take a Hike in a Park or a Botanical Garden

Going to Tenerife and not taking advantage of its many natural areas is a waste, fortunately, the island is home to a ton of different parks, but a must-visit is the Teide National Park.

It’s a UNESCO attraction focused on the Teide Volcano, one of the highest points in Spain. If you are situated in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, you’ll need to embark on a 2h road trip to the national park.

Once in the park, you’ll enjoy the volcanic landscape, interesting rock formations, and different hikes as well as a couple of observatory points. Also, if you want to hike to the top of the volcano, you need to get a permit from the Reservas de Parques Nacionales site.

A visit to La Orotava Town

La Orotava town is often overlooked by most tourists, but it’s a vibrant town like a museum with interesting architecture and buildings dating years back. It’s home to a ton of different religious buildings that are worth checking out, like the Iglesia de la Concepción and Iglesia del ex-convento de San Agustín.

As well as other buildings like Casa de los Balcones and the Town Hall, I highly recommend you to visit the small garden located behind the town hall, Hijuela del Botanico, it’s home to a ton of flowers and trees.

Take a Swim on a Beach or Natural Pools

Tenerife is home to a wide range of beaches and natural pools, most of which are free!

When it comes to beaches, a must-visit is Playa El Duque. Yellow sanded beach with turquoise water and moderate waves that attracts tourists. You’ll find all the amenities and services needed for an unforgettable day at the beach.

Next, take a trip to Garachico. Which is home to El Caleton, Tenerife’s most popular natural pool. The interesting rock formations make a perfect natural pool that gets crowded during summer and is perfect for taking a swim in the calm water while hearing the waves crashing on the rock. They were formed during a volcanic eruption years back, in 1706.

I highly recommend you take the time to stroll around Garachico town and check out places like Plaza de la Libertad, Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles, or the Antiguo Convento de San Francisco.
