HONOUR: New book about the Windrush generation seeks to commemorate the British-Caribbean community

THE BLACK Cultural Archives (BCA) has announced a new partnership with Scholastic to celebrate the Windrush Generation.

The collaboration between the BCA and the publisher will include a book titled ‘The Place for Me: Stories of the Windrush Generation.’

It is set to feature twelve stories that are inspired by people the from Windrush generation and derived from their archives for readers aged 8+.

Kevin George, Emma Norry and K.N. Chimbri are just three of the eleven contributing authors all of whom have a connection to the Windrush generation.

The foreword will be written by Trinidadian-British author, Dame Floella Benjamin and the books cover art illustrated by Joelle Avelino.

In June, the hardback will see its first publication to mark the Black Cultural Archive’s 40th anniversary and Windrush Day on 22nd  June which aims to honour the British-Caribbean community and the half a million Caribbeans who travelled to the UK after World War II.

Arike Oke, Managing Director of the Black Cultural Archives, has hailed the creation of the new book as a “landmark publication.”

She added: “The stories of the Windrush Generation are the stories of how post-war Britain was made, and stories about the shared histories that unite people of African descent around the world. I am delighted that Scholastic recognised the importance of making sure that children and families have access to this precious history, and doubly pleased at the incredible writers that answered the call.”

Publishing Manager at Scholastic UK, Leah James, also praised the collaboration.

“Working with the BCA is a dream come true. They are a brilliant organization working tirelessly to document the lives of black people in Britain,” she said.

“We are thrilled to be publishing so many brilliant authors who will be sharing the under-heard stories and history of the Windrush Generation with children and adults alike.”

‘The Place for Me: Stories of the Windrush Generation’ published in hardback in June 2021 and Scholastic will donate 50p from the sale of every book to the BCA.
