Weg Bara: The mother and daughter duo behind the private members society for black women

A MOTHER and daughter have started a private society for black women to create a sisterhood for those in the community.

Belle and Barbara Wegbara launched their business Weg Bara in May this year after heightened anticipation from avid Twitter followers since the entrepreneurs first announced their idea on social media.

Weg Bara is a members only society that puts the spotlight on black women and promises to give “access to the first opportunities and the empowerment of our communities fuelled by shared ambition.”

They aim to share career opportunities and funding outlets within their growing sisterhood and provide networking events across their partnered social venues.

Over 200 professional and entrepreneurial black women have applied to join the society with hopes of being part of the initiated members for the first May intake.

However, only about 50 women will be selected as part of this exclusive club.

Weg Bara is currently organising upcoming events and an Initiation dinner for members that make it through the three week-long secret initiation process, which is to be held in a secluded location.

The business partners have also recently confirmed a fashion show for black-owned brands to showcase their stylish pieces during London Fashion Week, and a retreat in Scotland complete with horse riding, spa treatments and swimming lessons.

Followed by a recent partnership with a well-established investment house to include financial advice and joint investment opportunities as part of the membership packages, which already include partnership with beauty brands, restaurants and exclusive locations.

Members will receive our publication, The Purple Prospectus which features details of the current opportunities across the U.K and how black women can tap into them.

The events are only a fraction of Weg Bara’s ambitious plan to help black women find and rebuild our community as both mother and daughter behind the new business are both passionate about the women’s rights.

Barbara, the society’s President, said: We want to rebuild our community with people who share our values and understand our vision. We don’t have all the answers so we can’t do it alone. So far, we have so much support from our team, our partners, family and even the applicants who have managed to be so patient while still expectant.

There’s a lot of pressure to get everything right from the beginning, but everyone has just been so kind. It’s definitely taken a village, but we are finally here.”

With investor capital of £100,000, an exclusive publication and member-only events, along with their commitment to fund support for black owned businesses in their prime and a mentorship programme for young black students, Weg Bara is ready to “take on London and paint every major British city purple.”
