The funeral for the assassinated Haitian president was marred by the sound of gunfire on Friday. Mourners and dignitaries were forced to rush for cover during the service for the late Haitian president Jovenel Moïse.

During the private service, protestors clashed with police just outside of the ceremony in Cap-Haïien.

The sound of gunshots interrupted the funeral service and teargas and smoke drifted into the event.

According to several reports, there were no injuries during the unrest.

Former first lady Martine Moïse arrived at her husband’s funeral to cries of “Justice! Justice!”

Mrs Moïse had her right arm in a sling, from the injuries she sustained in the attack, that killed her husband over two weeks ago.

Upon her arrival, she lay her left arm on the brown casket and then raised it to touch her heart. Mrs Moïse attended the funeral with three of her children.

Protestors blamed some of those attending the service for the former president’s death.

When Haiti’s national police chief, Léon Charles, arrived he was met with several cries of “Assassin!” and was threatened. This week a new prime minister was appointed with the support from international diplomats.

Ariel Henry will form a temporary government to lead the Caribbean nation until September –when elections are expected.

Haitian authorities have accused a group of foreign mercenaries made up of 26 Colombians and two Haitian Americans of carrying out the killing.

Authorities have said they have arrested at least 26 suspects in connection to the killing, including 18 former Colombian soldiers.

Police continue to look for more suspects who are believed to be on the run.

Moïse, 53, had been president of Haiti since February 2017.

The motive behind the assassination still remains unclear.
