A LAW graduate is supporting the next generation of solicitors to gain valuable experience by mentoring students at the University of Wolverhampton’s legal advice clinic.

The University of Wolverhampton Law School has an advice clinic in the city’s Mander Centre which provides guidance on legal issues to members of the public.

Nicola Thomas, a trainee solicitor at HRS Family Law Solicitors, is a LLB (Hons) and LLM graduate, and attends some of the family law sessions to provide guidance to current students.

Thomas said: “I have maintained links with the University by assisting in the Legal Advice Centre, running the family law clinic and also offering support and guidance to students who are finishing their degree and looking to pursue a career in law.

“The LLB has helped my career, not only broadening and expanding my knowledge of the law and given me an insight into the basic principle of law and been able to put them into practise in my working field on a day-to-day basis, not only in the office but also within the court arena as well.

“I advise all students to get stuck in – come out of our comfort zone, attend legal events within the University and outside of it and build up your network.

Attend courses or competitions such as mooting that will help with your advocacy skills if you are looking to pursue a career as a solicitor or barrister – that’s a key skill you require and it also builds up your confidence.”

Beverley Rizzotto, who manages the University’s Legal Advice Centre, said: “We’re really grateful that Nicola is able to give some of her time and share her expertise with current students. Gaining real-life experience is so valuable for law students – it really helps builds confidence and awareness of the law in practise.”
