6,000 Birmingham protestors pay homage to George Floyd

Those in the second city make their feelings clear in the knowledge that this pain will not easily disappear

TOGETHER AS ONE: Protestors in Birmingham on Thursday

A Voice reporter in Birmingham captures the feelings of the crowd as they peacefully protest the killing of George Floyd.

THE CHANTS from all races and ages told the story about how humankind are feeling about the savage brutality that George Floyd endured at the hands of the four policemen.

In a truly incredible moment, you will know that just over four weeks ago a black man was also shot in the street while out running and very little was said or done to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Video

Lies came to light when a video was released by a passer-by. Without the video they would have branded the black man a criminal.

“We are all in pain as this senseless act has caused grief to the family of human race of whatever shade.”

Floyd’s death has changed the narrative around racism. It took the courage of a white mayor, who in words and action, showed his abhorrence to the inhumanity demonstrated by the white policeman who killed George.

Change comes from many places but it has come and is travelling across the world. So those Chinese who are killing our African brothers in their country and in West Africa, they need to be aware that change is here and now.

Dr Martin Luther King said there is never a wrong time to do the right thing, the Mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jacob Frey, showed this to be true, though he must have been very challenged at what it might mean for his family and himself.

History

This is a defining moment in the history of racism not just for black people across the world but for their white counterparts who bear the scars of the racial hatred dished out by their people.

We know in every race there are those whose spirits fall short of the humanity given at birth, thankfully the young white generations are joining us in the call for racism to be eradicated.

Reality

The crowds in London, Manchester, and Birmingham all have images of police standing for Black Lives Matter but the reality is that all across the Eurocentric world the practice of racial hatred is much the same and change in behaviour will be hard won without structure changes by the policy makers.

Like the thousands here in Birmingham and across the world, we are all in pain as this senseless act has caused grief to the family of human race of whatever shade.

Our hearts and prayers go out to George Floyd’s family and all the young ones who will never be able to process what has happened. May the Creator receives his soul.

As I participated in two events in Birmingham in support of Mr. George Floyd, I realised that change is here and it’s the revolution that is on its way. When I drove around Wolverhampton City on June 4, all the matrix signs into the City displayed ‘Black Lives Matter’ along with a clenched fist. In Birmingham, I saw a white woman carrying a sign which says, ‘I don’t understand but I am here to stand’. Of course, racism is irrational and is difficult to understand but more and more young people are declaring, they know its wrong. Let us support them as they continue to press for revolutionary change in the institutions that uphold the evil practice of racism.

In the words of the late Martin Luther king ” And Good people do nothing”.

Protests are full of good people, now doing something it is the only way to be heard and say enough is enough. My background is from an Irish catholic history,.
