“I wish I could do this forever.” Kumbi, Successful jobseeker

OUT OF work for over half a year, Kumbi spared no effort in searching for a new role. However, because of the pandemic and countless restrictions, finding one proved to be a colossal challenge. Unable to connect or meet potential employers in person, Kumbi decided to turn to the Jobcentre Plus and was given the support he needed to successfully land his dream job.

Whilst unemployed, Kumbi encountered a number of obstacles, including getting his CV in front of the right people. Due to his niche interest and experience in music production, he struggled to find vacancies and those he did find, felt out of his reach. After countless rejections, Kumbi managed to secure a temporary job but it was very far from his home. Despite this, he took it as it was the only one that he had heard back from.

But the constant commuting and shifts at random hours of the day left Kumbi exhausted. With a passion for music, the job was also a far cry from what Kumbi wanted to do. He spoke to his Work Coach, who recommend the JobHelp website and started to browse available opportunities online. Kumbi’s Work Coach also helped him adapt his CV to find something music related and prepared him for potential interviews through practice sessions.

Then one day, Kumbi stumbled upon a role that almost seemed too good to be true. “I felt nervous applying in case of yet another rejection, but my Work Coach was there to support me all the way,” says Kumbi. He submitted his CV and cover letter and patiently waited to hear back. A few days later, he was asked to come in for an interview.

Armed with all the preparation he had done with his Work Coach, Kumbi felt empowered. He was able to confidently answer the questions he was asked and showed a clear sense of passion for the role. A few days later, he heard back. “They offered me the role!” shares Kumbi excitedly. “I was over the moon and couldn’t wait to get started! I finally found something I actually wanted to pursue.”

For the past month, Kumbi has been working in sound production. As a sound producer, he is able to record and manipulate voices, music and sound effects for different types of media, such as films and albums, as well as handling various types of audio equipment. Currently, he is working on an audio project, researching sounds he likes and recording demos with his colleague. Kumbi acknowledges his Work Coach for supporting him to get a role in an area he is passionate about. “I love it,” he says passionately. “I wish I could do this forever because it’s something I truly enjoy.”

Kumbi’s advice for others seeking employment is to simply keep pushing. “The most important thing is to never give up, no matter the situation,” he remarks. “And don’t be afraid to explore your passions like I did – I don’t think anyone should settle for anything less.” He also says that there is no harm in asking for help when you need it. “Get someone to help you with things you don’t fully understand,” he says. “My Work Coach was always there to support me whenever I needed it.”
