Grenfell campaigners organise virtual tribute walk

The monthly memorial activity has been moved online due to the coronavirus outbreak

GRENFELL CAMPAIGNERS have organised a virtual silent walk to remember those who died in the tower block fire.

It has now been 34 months since the tragic blaze killed 72 people.

Grenfell United, the organisers of tonight’s walk, said in a tweet: “Even apart, we are still together for justice.”

The virtual silent walk will start at 7pm this evening (April 14) and those wishing to take part can do so by tuning into Grenfell United’s YouTube, Facebook or Instagram pages.

During the online tribute speeches will be delivered and there will be a reading of the names of those who died in the fire on June 14, 2017.

Justice

Ahead of today’s virtual walk, campaigners issued an appeal for video clips of supporters saying the word “justice”. These have been compiled and will be shared as part of the evening’s tribute.

Organisers have also encouraged participants to put green lights or green hearts in their windows as a show of solidarity. The colour green and a green heart were adopted as a symbol to remember those who were killed in the tower block fire.

The silent walk has taken place monthly since June 2017. As well as giving the community an opportunity to publicly remember and celebrate the lives of those lost in the fire, it also serves as a platform for campaigners to show their determination to get justice.

“This month we are not able to be together in person. In this difficult time we are reminded that the strength of family, neighbours and community will get us through. We must all play our part to look after each other by staying at home – but we can still demonstrate our solidarity, remember our loved ones and raise our voices for justice,” Grenfell United said in a statement.
