RESPONDING TO the announcement by the Home Office that they will grant indefinite leave to remain for the dependants of medical professionals from overseas who have died during the Covid-19 pandemic, British Medical Association (BMA) council chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul said: “The BMA is pleased to see that the Government has decided to grant immediate indefinite leave to remain for the dependents of those who sadly died of Covid-19, as well as without a requirement to pay a fee.
“Tragically, the fight against this virus has cost some international doctors and healthcare professionals their life.”
BMA
“This follows recent lobbying by the BMA, including an open letter to the Home Secretary, which recognised the enormous risks that doctors from overseas have and continue to take to deliver care to critically ill patients.
The BMA is a trade union and professional association representing and negotiating on behalf of all doctors in the UK.
The Council chair added: “Tragically, the fight against this virus has cost some international doctors and healthcare professionals their life. It is only right therefore that, at what is an immeasurably challenging time, their dependents are afforded a sense of security and reassurance about their future status in the UK.
Invaluable
“This pandemic highlights the invaluable dedication and service that doctors from overseas make to our NHS and the patients that they care for.
“Now more than ever, it is absolutely crucial that we show them and their families how much they are valued.”

The right thing to do would be to offer them a substantial package of death in service support of at least £100,000 to go back to their countries of origin if that is what they chose to do.
Why the BMA and the Government think they want to be stuck in this country on benefits is beyond me.
