A LOT has happened since Meghan Markle shared her truth in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Piers Morgan has stepped down from Good Morning Britain, and it has emerged that Meghan personally complained about how his statements might be interpreted by others struggling with their mental health.

The Royal family have released their statement on the situation, and even Beyoncé is involved. Read to find out more.

Meghan’s intervention and Piers Morgan’s exit

According to Omid Scobie, Royal Correspondent at Harper’s Bazaar, the Duchess of Sussex wrote a formal letter of complaint to Carolyn McCall, ITV’s chief executive.

Allegedly, she wrote in the letter that she was concerned that others having suicidal thoughts would be impacted by Piers’ disbelief.

Piers Morgan has since resigned from Good Morning Britain (GMB). Ofcom received 41,000 complaints after he claimed he didn’t believe Meghan Markle when she said she had suicidal thoughts.

The mental health charity Mind issued a statement in response, saying that they ‘applauded’ Meghan for speaking openly and helping tackle mental health stigma.

They added: “We know racism is a big part of this conversation and racial trauma can have a real impact on people’s mental health.”

“This will help us to provide better support for people from racialised communities.”

The former Good Morning Britain presenter has since doubled down on his comments.

He said in a tweet: “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t.

“If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”

On this morning’s programme GMB presenter Susanna Reid was accompanied by presenter Ranvir Singh.

She made a statement about Morgan’s departure, saying: “He has been my presenting partner Monday to Wednesday for more than five years, and during Brexit and the pandemic and other issues, he has been a voice for many of you, and a voice that many of you have rallied against.

“It is certainly going to be very different. But shows go on, and so on we go.”

Queen’s statement in response to the interview

The Palace released a statement in response to the interview that attracted 11 million viewers on ITV.

It read: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

Some have speculated that the comment on how recollections may vary, and the amount of time the royal family took to issue a statement suggests they have privately discussed the interview.

Oprah Winfrey has since said neither the Queen or Prince Philip made comments about Archie’s skin tone and the implications of this.

What do Britons think?

According to research from Pipslay, 40% of Britons believe Prince Harry and Meghan failed to live up to their responsibilities.

However, 36% of Brits do believe the couple have the right to a different life.

Interestingly, almost 60% (58%) think it’s time for the country to stop obsessing over the royal family.

56% of Britons also believe that people of this nation were justified in their expectations from Prince Harry and Meghan to stay faithful to a highly traditional monarchy while re-energising it.

Even Beyoncé got involved

You probably already know that Serena Williams has spoken out in support of Meghan.

She shared her own experiences of media racism and sexism, and said she wanted the next generation to live in a respectful society.

Now, Beyoncé has also weighed in. On her website, she wrote: “Thank you Meghan for your courage and leadership.

“We are all strengthened and inspired by you.”
