Conservative Party reported to have pulled funding from Shaun Bailey’s mayoral campaign

NEW ALLEGATIONS that Shaun Bailey’s funding for mayoral elections has dropped or reduced have emerged in the Daily Mirror.

The paper claims that sources in the Conservative party have decided to “pull the plug” on funding, partly because Shaun has found it hard to raise money.

Still, all might not be lost. Shaun has a backer in property tycoon Nick Candy. According to The Times, Candy has been approaching City slickers to ask for donations.

On March 11, Bailey joined Candy for a webinar where the pair discussed why change in London was long overdue, focusing on crime in a bid to poach funding from incumbent Sadiq Khan.

Bailey has come under fire recently for misjudged comments made about a vigil held for Sarah Everard, whose body was found in Kent after she went missing.

He suggested that the current mayor should have been involved in police decision-making at the vigil. Since then, it has been reported that the Metropolitan Police report to the Home Office, not the London mayor.

Shaun also received negative press coverage when he suggested that homeless people might be able to save up mortgage deposits and buy properties through shared ownership schemes.

Discussion about a lack of funding in the Bailey mayoral campaign camp follow more historic allegations. In January, City AM reported that Conservative Party HQ had cut funding for Bailey’s press team.

If elected, Bailey would follow in the footsteps of John Archer, who became the first black mayor in London when he was elected mayor of Battersea in 1913. His political views were more left wing than current candidate Bailey’s, however.

A spokesperson for Shaun Bailey’s campaign said: “Londoners are completely uninterested in fabricated stories. Londoners care about the issues. And that’s what Shaun Bailey is focused on.

“Knife crime has reached historic highs. Good homes are unaffordable. Our transport network is struggling to cope. It’s clear Sadiq Khan has failed. London needs a fresh start — and Shaun Bailey has a plan to deliver it, along with the support of the entire Conservative Party. That’s the story here.“
