A YOUNG schoolgirl has been praised for calling the police when she found her mum lying on the floor.

Monjola Popoola, who was six at the time, from Bolton, quickly called the police when she found her mum, Bunmi, lying on the floor.

The schoolgirl was able to calmly talk to call handlers and explain what was happening and guided them to her house.

As a result of her swift action, emergency services were also to get to her address within 10 minutes and administer first aid to her mother.

Speaking about the incident, Bunmi said: “I was really sick and had a high temperature – similar to when I had Covid – and lost consciousness.

“I am very proud of Monjola – she is amazing and I don’t know what would have happened if she hadn’t called 999.

“I would also like to thank the emergency services who were also amazing.”

Neighbourhood Sergeant Zach Keneally and PCSO Mark Flannery, from Bolton Prevention Hub, went to St Thomas of Canterbury RC Primary School to present Monjola with a framed Bravery Award signed by GMP’s Bolton commander, Chief Superintendent Stephanie Parker.

Sgt Keneally said: “Monjola could not wake up her mum up when she fell ill.

“But she didn’t panic and remained calm, calling 999 and providing the call handler with her postcode and door number, allowing GMP, NWAS and GMFRS to find the address and get medical help for her mother.

“She remained extremely calm on the phone to the call handler and was able to let emergency services into her address, all while looking after her two younger siblings.”

Officers presented Monjola, who is now seven, with the award at a school assembly.
