A BRAND new Black female superhero doll – which aims to give Black children confidence – has been launched.

Thundergirl celebrates female empowerment, kindness and helping others.

The new plushie doll is the brainchild of mother Fola Williams, who is the founder of Sheni and Teni – an online website providing diverse children’s toys and books.

Ms Williams founded the toy company in 2018 and says Thundergirl is her contribution to providing more black representation in the toy sector for black children.

Ms Williams said: “As a Nigerian mum living and raising children in London, I’ve thought hard about how my children will fare in this society and what contribution I can make to make it a better place not just for them, but for other kids as well.

“This is why I started my business, Sheni and Teni and specifically why I’ve created a Black, female superhero doll based off the protagonist in my children’s picture book.”

Ms Williams said the new doll is based off her the main character in her children’s book ‘Ara becomes Thundergirl’.

She added: “Thunder girl is the only black female superhero on the market right now, therefore it was an honour to create this and present this to others.”

Ms Williams is passionate about her culture and wants more toys to reflect her background as well as her identity.

Thundergirl is a Black superhero, who believes in saving the world, with her shield and sword.

She also she wears African print cape paying homage to her culture.

Ms Williams hopes the doll will encourage imaginative play and empower black children to believe they are also capable of achieving anything in the world.

But she also wants children to embrace Thundergirl’s ethos of kindness in their day-to-day lives.
