THE DEATH of a man who died after being restrained by police officers during a mental health episode at his home is set to be examined by an inquest.

Mouayed Bashir, 29, has barricaded himself in his room which led his “concerned” parents to call the emergency services asking for an ambulance following advice from a GP on the morning of February 17 2021 in Newport, Wales.

However, dispatchers sent police officers to the home and they forced themselves inside his room. He was restrained at the scene and went into cardiac arrest. He was later pronounced dead.

Bashir’s family described him as an “extremely kind and generous person” who was a registered carer for his mother and was “popular and cheeky” amongst friends.

The inquest, which opened today (January 15) into his tragic death will hear evidence about the police officers’ conduct and also the delay in the attendance of the ambulance, and the care that Bashir received at his home and on route to the hospital.

It will also examine the circumstances of Bashir’s death and the actions of Gwent police force
