THE METROPOLITAN police officer charged with the murder of Chris Kaba will not be named until March, a judge has ruled.
The firearms officer, who has only been known as NX121, was originally meant to have their identity revealed on 30 January 2024.
But at a hearing at the Old Bailey, it was confirmed the anonymity order will now be lifted on March 1.
Kaba was fatally shot by a firearms officer from the Metropolitan Police on September 5 2022, in Streatham, south London. He was unarmed at the time.
In September last year, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided to charge the officer with murder. The decision was welcomed by Kaba’s family, who said in a statement at the time: “Chris was so very loved by our family and all his friends.
“He had a bright future ahead of him, but his life was cut short. Our family and our wider community must see justice for Chris.
“We welcome this charging decision, which could not have come too soon. Now we await the trial of the firearms officer without delay and hope and pray that justice will be served.”
The 24-year-old’s death sparked outrage from his family and racial justice campaigners, with protests taking place across London demanding for criminal charges to be lodged.
The firearms officer’s murder trial has been put back to October 1.
