A peer has been branded racist after calling Kamala Harris ‘the Indian’

Though he has apologised, he denies that his comments were racist

LORD JOHN Kilclooney was accused of racism after he called vice president elect Kamala Harris “the Indian” on social media.

In a tweet, he wrote: “What happens if Biden moves on and the Indian becomes President. Who then becomes Vice President?”

The tweet has since been deleted.

He has apologised for offence caused in a tweet saying: “I certainly withdraw my reference to her as an Indian as it seems to have upset some people.

“I did not know her name and identified her with the term Indian. Most people understood. Racist NO.”

Many on social media have criticised the comments.

Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu said: “You racist bigot!

“You know Biden by name but reduce Kamala Harris to Indian. Your white supremacy is palpable.”

Thangam Debbonaire, who is the Member of Parliament for Bristol West was also disappointed by the comments.

The Shadow Secretary of State for Housing said: “She’s been democratically elected to VP of the USA and you don’t use her name?

“I’m of Indian origin and proud of it, but I’m not ‘The Indian’.”

The politician questioned why Kilclooney did not Google her name before tweeting.

It is not the first time he has been accused of racism.

The Independent reports that in the past, Kilclooney called Irish prime minister at the time Leo Varadkar a “typical Indian.”
