US police have released graphic footage of an unarmed black motorist being shot at least 60 times.
The graphic footage was released by Ohio police on Sunday for the first time and has sparked anger across the country.
Early autopsy reports show, Jayland Walker, 25, suffered at least 60 bullet wounds after he was shot by Akron officers.
Officers said they attempted to pull Mr Walker over for an unspecified minor traffic violation but he did not stop.
Mr Walker jumped out of his car and ran but was chased on foot by officers.
Mr Walker was gunned down in a barrage of bullets, on Monday June 27, CNN reports.
Bobby DiCello is the lawyer representing the family of Mr Walker.
He says the body camera footage shows he was unarmed.
He also claims police officers shot at Mr Walker more than 90 times.
His legal team has reviewed the autopsy and Mr DiCello said it showed that Mr Walker was hit at least 60 times.
Speaking prior to the footage being released, Mr DiCello said: “I’ve been a trial lawyer for 22 years and I’ve never seen anything remotely close to what that video is going to show.”
Akron police chief Stephen Mylett said on Sunday, that officers “felt that Mr Walker had turned and was motioning and moving into a firing position.”
Mr Mylett said that Mr Walker was not armed.
The harrowing footage was released for the first time yesterday and has prompted an investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI).
Following the release of the footage, hundreds of protesters gathered in downtown Akron, demanding justice for Mr Walker.
According to reports, the officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave.
Seven of them are white, and one is black, according to the department.
NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in a statement that Mr Walker’s death wasn’t self-defense, but “was murder. Point blank.”
Akron mayor Dan Horrigan said he is “beyond outraged and beyond shocked” about what happened during the traffic stop.
Bernice King, daughter of civil Rights Icon Martin Luther King, released a statement about the shooting and called for those involved to be held accountable.
Ms King said: “If the need for nonviolence as a philospophy and methodology for structural and systemic change has ever been in question, here is evidence that it is needed.
“Our nation’s fascination with the application of deadly force to apprehend Black bodies must stop.
“This militaristic “shoot now and ask questions later” mentality when policing Black people cannot continue.
“We must do the work to hold our institutions accountable.”
A handgun and loaded magazine were found in Walker’s car after the shooting, police said.
The shooting is the latest killing of Black men by law enforcement in the United States.
Campaigners are demanding the officers involved are charged with murder.
In May 2020, the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked global protests against racial injustice, use of excessive force and police brutality.
