Prison staff performed "life-saving measures" on Chauvin before he was taken to hospital

DEREK CHAUVIN, the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of murdering George Floyd has been stabbed in prison.

The office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison confirmed Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate.

He was reportedly seriously injured on Friday at a federal prison in Arizona.

The attack happened at the Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, a medium-security prison.

According to the Associated Press, prison employees responded and performed “life-saving measures” before Chauvin was taken to a hospital.

In a statement on Sunday, Attorney General’s Office spokesperson Brian Evans said regarding Chauvin’s condition: “We have heard that he is expected to survive.”

The former Minneapolis police officer was convicted of murder after he kneeled on Mr Floyd’s neck on May 25, 2020.

Mr Floyd’s death sparked global protests demanding an end to police brutality and racism.  

A bystander captured the incident on video where Mr Floyd, who was 46, was heard saying “I can’t breathe.”

Police had accused Mr Floyd of using a fake $20 bill at a nearby shop

In June 2021, Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison for the murder of Mr Floyd. 

It was the first time a police officer in the state of Minneapolis had been convicted of killing a black man. 

In February 2022, three other former officers Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao, were convicted of depriving Mr Floyd of his right to medical care.

In August, the fourth and final former police officer, Thao, who held back bystanders as Mr Floyd was killed was sentenced to five years in prison.

Thao was the fourth and final former police officer to be sentenced in connection to the killing of Mr Floyd in 2020.
