KENYA HAS announced it wants to ban reggae concerts in residential areas.
Nairobi County Assembly (NCA) has passed a motion to ban street parties and Reggae concerts in the city.
Advocating for the new bill, Majority Leader Peter Imwatok, says it will protect residents from noise disturbances and cut down “immorality.”
“There has been an alarming rise in the organisation of street parties resembling reggae concerts within residential zones,” Imwatok said.
“These events often coincide with various criminal activities, instances of immorality, drug abuse, resident muggings, and excessive noise pollution.”
Imwatok insists he is a reggae music fan and wants concerts to be held in clubs and stadiums instead of residential areas.
“I’m very happy with my fellow MCAs for feeling the sense of illegality versus people’s rights. I am a reggae fan but doing the same in residential areas is unlawful, we have clubs,” he said.
Imwatok added he will be pushing for the enforcement and compliance of the new law across Nairobi.
He said: “Nairobi County Government must now move with speed to enforce this ban. They don’t have any (other) choice but to ensure that it is done, so that we can protect our children.”
Other supporters of the new bill say students are sneaking into reggae concerts instead of studying and this has had a detrimental impact on their education.
