ELAINE THOMPSON-HERAH completed the coveted sprint double at the Tokyo Olympics when she struck 200m gold.

The Jamaican retained her 200m crown in a personal best time of 21.53 seconds, the second fastest of all time, to add to her 100m gold to place herself amongst sprinting greats having completed the same impressive double at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.

Thompson-Herah saw off Namibia’s Christine Mboma (21.81) and American Gabrielle Thomas (21.87). Thompson-Herah’s compatriot, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was surprisingly run out of the medals.

The winner was in total of the 200m from the gun. She made a great start and asserted her authority off the crown of the bend. At this stage Fraser-Pryce looked set to make the podium but alarmingly ran out of steam.

Thompson-Herah and Fraser-Pryce will attempt to put their rivalry to one side when relay medals are up for grabs on Friday.

Her latest success has seen Thompson-Herah confirm her status as the definitive sprint queen. She had not stepped onto a podium at a major championship since those aforementioned efforts in Rio, but she has produced the goods when it mattered against world class fields in Tokyo.

Only injuries have blighted her stellar career, but the comeback queen is well and truly back.
