Nigerian football factory produces another gem in the shape of Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka but England will be the real beneficiaries

GIFTED: Bukayo Saka

THE NIGERIAN football factory has unearthed yet another football gem. His name is Bukayo Saka and at just 19 years of age he’s set to follow in the footsteps of other Super Eagles that have illuminated the Premier League.

The real disappointment for Nigeria football fans is that Saka will forever be seen in the white of England and not the famous green of the African nation.

Saka, arguably the most talented teenager in the English top-flight, was the star of the show as the Gunners beat Southampton on January 26. Not only does he score goals, he creates them as well.

More Nigerians have featured in the Premier League than any other African country, with Efan Ekoku being the first when he represented Norwich City in April 1993.

Saka, born in West London but of Nigerian descent, has played less than 50 times for his club but already there are signs that he will be another footballer with Nigerian blood to make his mark at the highest level.

His manager, Mikel Arteta, told the club’s website: “Bukayo is doing really well and is always asking to train more and improve in areas that he can do better.

GUNNER BE GOOD: Saka celebrates a goal against Southampton

“I think he’s much better when he plays in the last line of our attack. The truth is that we have only one left-footed full back and sometimes we’ll have to use him there.

“It’s good for his development as well to play there. Last season he played a lot of games there and became a much better player. He’s got that talent and he’s always keen to play in different positions.

‘Bukayo Saka is so humble’

“But obviously in certain moments, we have to try to find some stability for him. We just need to focus on where we are heading with him.

He’s really humble, really respectful but at the same time he’s got that character within him and on the pitch he can demand the ball. He can make actions and decisions that is not very usual at his age.

“That’s something that is great because we need that leadership and he’s gaining that with his performances and attitude around the team.”

Kanu is the most celebrated Nigerian to have worn the red and white of the famous north London club. The hope now must be that while Saka is not an official Super Eagle, his Nigerian descent ensures that the famous football nation can take some credit.
