ENGLAND GOAL scorers are Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane are among the favourites to win the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) award.

Following England’s dramatic semi-final win against Denmark, England’s striker and top goalscorer Kane has emerged as the favourite to win the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year, according to BetVictor.

Kane decisive goal against the Danes took his Euro 2020 goal tally to four, just one behind Golden Boot leader Cristiano Ronaldo, and whilst he could end up winning that accolade as well as the tournament overall, he is also the favourite to win SPOTY at 10/3.

Kane’s England teammate Sterling is his closest competitor as Sterling, who won the controversial penalty against Denmark, is 4/1 to become the first footballer to win the award since Ryan Giggs in 2009.

Sterling told the media after the success against Denmark: “We just had to stay patient. We knew with the legs we have in the team, with our aggression and power, it would only be a matter of time until we broke them down.

“It’s another step in the right direction,” he said. “Once we’re back in the dressing room, that’s it over. We have to focus on the weekend now. It’s step by step and that’s all we can do.

 “You can see by the numbers that came out tonight, the energy and the atmosphere, what football means to this country,” the 26-year-old added. “People cheering, people with their shirts off. It’s top.”

Sprinter Dina Asher-Smith was the previous favourite for SPOTY before the Euros and ahead of the Olympics in Tokyo she’s still a real contender at 6/1.
