SENEGAL HAVE qualifed for the World Cup knockout stages for first time in 20 years after a 2-1 win against Ecuador, reports Jordan Collins.

After being in control for the majority of the first half, Senegal temporarily lost their composure after conceding in the 67th minute but managed to regain the lead just three minutes later with Kalidou Koullibaly cementing Senegal’s place in the knockout stages for the first time since 2002.

Ecuador came sporting a high 4-3-3 line, confusing many who thought they would play defensively as they came into the match a point clear of Senegal and only needing to avoid defeat to qualify.

Pressure started to build for Senegal, as despite dominating the game, they found themselves goalless 40 minutes in with elimination on the horizon.

That all changed minutes later as Sarr earned a penalty after a careless challenge from Piero Hincapie sent him to the ground.

Ismaila Sarr took to the spot and buried a no-look penalty in the bottom right corner giving the African side a much needed goal to end he first half.

In the second half, Ecuador quickly changed their formation in the second half to 4-2-2 and played much more aggressively.

This paid off quickly as Moses Ceidedo was able to fire home after a corner from Felix Torres, in the 66th minute after being left unmarked at the back post.

Senegal regained their composure and the lead quickly in the 69th minute .After a ball from a set piece was deflected by the South American’s allowing Kalidou Koulibaly’s to tuck the ball away.

Senegal were able to hold on for the rest of the match, not allowing Ecuador any great opportunities.

The result provides redemption. In 2018, they failed to qualify for the business end of the global showcase having collected more yellow cards than Japan.
