THE Indomitable Lions produced yet another World Cup shock as they beat the five-time champions Brazil 1-0. Despite the win, Cameroon bow out at the group stage, reports George Attwood.
Vincent Aboubakar’s 92nd minute goal saw Cameroon become the first African team to beat Brazil at a World Cup. The defeat didn’t stop Brazil from topping the group for the 11th-straight tournament.
As soon as the ball nestled in the bottom corner, Aboubakar whipped off his shirt in celebration. However, he had already been booked and was sent off with a smile. His goal meant that for the first time in 17 years Brazil lost a game in the group stage at a World Cup.
It was Cameroon’s first win at a World Cup for 20 years. The last time they won a World Cup game, their manager, Rigoberto Song, was captain.
Coming into tonight’s match, Brazil was already through into the round-of-16 and made wholesale changes. Their biggest concern was the fitness of Neymar.
The Brazilian forward missed tonight’s game with an ankle injury and will be assessed in the coming days to see if he can play again in Qatar.
Throughout the first half Brazil showed just how dangerous they could be. Both Antony and Rodrygo found themselves running at the Cameroon defence but couldn’t find an end product.
Despite withstanding a lot of pressure from the South Americans, Cameroon arguably had the best chance of the half in the 48th minute. A cross came in from Moumi Ngamaleu but the header from Bryan Mbeumo wasn’t powerful enough. That header was the first shot on target that Brazil conceded at the 2022 World Cup.
In the second half, Brazil struggled to create any real chances. With Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli going close on two occasions.
