FOR THE first time in the World Cup’s long history, an African nation has reached the semi finals of the World Cup. Morocco’s Atlas Lions deservedly beat Portugal 1-0 to reach the competition’s last four to write their names into the history books.

A Youssef En-Nesyri header earned Morocco their shock win against a Portugal side full of world class talent including Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal talisman walked straight off the pitch on his own at the final whistle, and was in tears as he went down the tunnel.

But no one could deny that the African side deserved to go through to the last four where they will play either France or England.

They were skilful, brave and hungry from the off despite only having 39 per cent possession. They spent most of the game defending having taken the lead in the 42nd minute but showed their spirit thereafter.

They showed their ability to overcome when towards the end of a tense game, Walid Cheddira was sent off for two yellow cards in the space of a minute. The Lions’ held on to shock the football world.
