The Wheel Deal: Kia Niro HEV 4 1.6 GDi

The new, second-generation Kia Niro aims to double down on the huge success of the old model

POPULAR: Kia's second generation Niro

THERE’S a lot to like in the Kia range as the South Korean manufacturer goes from strength to strength.

Among the company’s first-class vehicles is the new Niro. The first-generation Niro launched in the UK in 2016 and has been a consistent best seller in the United Kingdom.

The latest version is most likely to continue that trend. The new, second-generation Kia Niro aims to double down on the huge success of the old model.

Adding extra desirability inside and out, it continues the traits that make the old model so popular; namely very low running costs and the choice of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric power.

The new Kia Niro is packed with all the features you would want in a car. Whether you’re looking for a fully electric, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid the Niro ticks the boxes.

Having the lightest battery weight of just 34 kg among the three models, and a petrol engine of 1.6 litres, the Kia Niro hybrid’s most distinct feature is its ability to recognise its location and switch to green zone mode, allowing the electric driving mode to kick in.

The all-new Niro illustrates Kia’s fresh approach to the traditional crossover vehicle and provides important differentiators that make it stand out in a crowded segment.

This latest version has received a major makeover for its second generation with an entirely new front-end design with pinched headlights and a single light cluster below.

The design has been inspired by HabaNiro concept, first revealed at the 2019 New York auto show. The angular ‘heartbeat’ daytime running lights create a contemporary look.

A small but noticeable increase in overall size has also made the Niro more practical. Its tall roofline and boxy shape always helped in this regard, and there’s now plenty of rear legroom for adults.

Its steering is accurate and consistently weighted, so it’s easy to thread the Niro along a narrow road, and it always feels more like a hatchback with a high seating position, than a large SUV or an unwieldy 4×4.

All versions are front-wheel drive too, so while a bit of extra ground clearance can be useful down a gravel track, the Niro isn’t cut out for off-roading.

The Niro hybrid has a 1.6-litre petrol engine and small electric motor, working together to produce up to 139bhp. It’s enough for a 0-62mph time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed just in excess of 100mph.

Three state-of-the-art electrified powertrains, sustainable interior materials and exceptional safety performance combine to ensure the all-new version surpasses customer expectations.

The redesigned Niro is a key model in Kia’s growing eco-friendly line-up, which will include 14 BEV models by 2027, nine of which will be available in the UK.

For your money, in terms of interior design and comfort you get

shift by wire gear selection, all-round electric windows with driver and front passenger auto up/down/safety function,  a rear console ventilation duct and heated steering wheel.

The compact crossover utility vehicle (C-CUV) segment is one of the most competitive, with an array of models on offer. The Niro is a genuine competitor for your hard-earned cash. Kia’s popular Niro crossover has been entirely redesigned from the ground up to meet the complex and diverse needs of today’s environmentally conscious car users.

Should you make a purchase you will be the beneficiary of a perfect blend of form and function, the all-new Niro is a safe, family-friendly vehicle with favourable economic and environmental credentials that will encourage many people to take a meaningful first step into electrification.
