‘We must now ensure their voices are heard and their legacies are firmly enshrined in the collective national memory’

Baroness Floella Benjamin DBE - Chair, Windrush Commemoration Committee has a very special message for Windrush Day

ALL SMILES: Baroness Benjamin DBE celebrating with Mr Alford Gardener, 94, who was a passenger on the Empire Windrush in 1948

“THE WINDRUSH Era began when Caribbean pioneers disembarked from the ageing passenger liner ‘Empire Windrush’ at Tilbury Docks, more than 70 years ago.

“It signified the start of an entire cultural movement of thousands of men, women and children that helped to rebuild and shape Britain following the Second World War.

I am encouraging you to celebrate Windrush Day at home and join in with the brilliant and exciting virtual and online events, workshops and exhibitions.

“This year, I am encouraging you to celebrate Windrush Day at home and join in with the brilliant and exciting virtual and online events, workshops and exhibitions that have been developed to commemorate the day.

“While the Windrush Generation’s contribution has not always been recognised , we must now ensure their voices are heard and their legacies are firmly enshrined in the collective national memory.

“Taking part in the second national Windrush Day is the perfect opportunity to do just that and acknowledge this part of our British history.”
